The wire is thinner than the standard duty ones

bob27July 2024

I already had the standard duty jaycar alligator clips and was pretty happy with them, although they couldn't handle all that much current, the wires started heating up very quickly at around 3 to 4 amps. I decided to get these "Heavy Duty" alligator clip wires to handle higher currents with less heat and voltage drop, and it turns out, these wires are even worse than the standard duty ones, they can barely handle 2 amps without rapidly heating up and dropping voltage. I tested the voltage drop of the standard duty alligator clip wires and the new "Heavy Duty" ones and the standard duty had a voltage drop of 0.98V at 3 amp, but the heavy duty had a voltage drop of 2.36V at 3 amp. However, I can say that the quality of the alligator clips (not the wires) are pretty good and clamp tight, I definitely think that these should use much thicker wires if they are being sold as "Heavy Duty" though.

Cheep and nasty.

They are cheap, about $1 a lead, but the electrical wire is steal! and has a 0.1 ohm resistance for the 400mm length wire. The data sheet says they 0.1mm² about SWG50, this is inaccurate as 0.1mm² is about SWG29, or SWG50 is about 0.0005mm². Either way, these leads are only good for about 100mA as they get hot running 500mA through them.

Iron wire

These get warm when in use, odd. A magnet picks up the wire, not the clip, picks up the wire itself. Don't waste your time with them.

Rubbish.

Really unhappy with these things. Many of the clips have misaligned jaws which makes them hard to open, and the super-slippery plastic sheaths make this even harder. Just a rubbish product.

avoid cheap leads

same set of reviews for the light duty & "heavy" duty jumper lead sets - so which are they for? good tips though to avoid steel rather than copper wire leads
