Reliable and robust

SteveMay 2025

These may lack the security and feedback of WiFi smart switches, but in my experience they've been far more reliable: 80% of the WiFi smart switches I've bought have failed within one year, but my set of these RF switches is still going strong after 3 years of use. They're simple to control with any microcontroller and a 433 MHz transmitter for on-off-keying. JayCar documents this on their website. The remotes each use a random 20-bit code, stored in the socket during setup. There are no rolling codes or other security mechanisms. Replay attacks are simple, so you wouldn't want to connect anything hazardous to these, but for simple home automation like turning on speakers or lights, the lack of security isn't a problem. I hope this product isn't being phased out, but I've stocked up on plugs just in case.

Great ac remotes.

TerryJuly 2026

I have been using these ac remotes from Jaycar for years, and they are perfect for the many lamps we have. They do not work for touch lamps and some types of thermostaticly controlled heaters. They do not require your personal information as 'smart' ones do, and are seriously cheaper. Truly great!

Great idea - poor execution

Worked fine to start with. After four weeks, two of the sockets (into each that I have a heater plugged) are randomly turning themselves on and off.

Flawless

Excellent product. When you plug in the outlet attachments, the light on it will flash. Press the on switch for the letter on the remote that you want to set it to. You can also replug it in and either press the "off" switch for a letter to remove that binding, or press another letter if for some reason you'd like to have one outlet activated by more than one letter. With this system you can have any combination of one or more outlets controlled by one or more letters. Outlets remember their bindings, so if you are replugging them in and don't want to change anything, just let them finish flashing, or press a letter which they are already bound to. Sometimes if you are not paying attention you may wind up with incorrect bindings, in which case just figure out which outlet is bound to which switch and remove anything you don't want. If you have it set up correctly it all works flawlessly. Activates instantly and doesn't require line of sight/aiming. Goes through walls. Remote battery lasts forever. I have three lights and a radiant heater in my living area which I can control from my couch with simple presses. Much prefer it to faffing around with wifi smart switches and voice commands.
