Surveillance video installations have long required dedicated video wiring and power supplies. While there are still some advantages to this approach, an NVR might just be the right option for you.

The main point of difference is that Network Video Recorders communicate much like an internet connection, or more accurately, computer network. Indeed, they use standard networking cables and hardware, which is a major advantage if you already have cabled networking (or WiFi - if supported by your NVR). Cat5 network cabling allows for very long transmission, and because it's digital, with no perceptual loss in quality. The NVR will generally provide Power Over Ethernet (PoE) to your cameras too, which saves on requiring power close to your cameras too. One cable does the lot!

It's up to the individual NVR and cameras. NVR / IP transmission will handle full HD signals all the way up to 4K without a problem. Therefore the individual quality of the cameras and the recording unit will determine the quality of the video captured. Look for 4K or UHD (ultra high definition) hardware if you need to ensure the best quality footage.

Your NVR will usually have a monitor output (HDMI more often than not) so you can display locally. However, you can usually view it via web browser from a computer on the same network too. If you're not constantly monitoring the cameras (ie, they're purely for security after-the-fact), then a web browser means you don't require further dedicated hardware to manage recording and review footage.

Because an NVR already uses computer network (IP) technology, it's rare for an NVR not to support mobile device access with the use of an app. This means you can keep an eye on things from just about anywhere with an internet connection. This is a feature often offered by traditional DVRs too, so while not necessarily unique to an NVR, it's very handy to have regardless.
