Many people still just want a basic pocket AM/FM portable with simple “thumbwheel” tuning and volume. This radio certainly gives you that, but it also uses advanced digital signal processing for a performance that leaves traditional analogue circuitry for dead. The AM function is definitely no afterthought; at night you can typically pick up something on every spot on the dial. It’s like having a high-end car radio in your pocket; perfect for going bush.

There's  a telescopic antenna for FM, and a traditional “slide-rule” tuning indicator.  The 1-inch built-in loudspeaker provides clear sound for sports or talkback, or you can plug in the provided earphones, or use your favourite Hi Fi ones.

Features:

- AM/FM Selection (Mono only)
- Simple Mechanical Tuning
- Telescopic Antenna
- Earphones
- Uses BK1198 advanced signal processing chip (ZK8829)

This little radio has a pretty impressive speaker for such a small package. Simple to operate and perfect for popping into your shirt pocket and pottering around the garden with.

Not an emergency devise

Big TAugust 2025

I purchased this radio 7 days ago as an emergency radio for a potential disaster scenario as well as casual use. The radio sound and ease of use are superb; however, as an emergency device, it would be useful for only a very short duration as the battery (rechargeable) gives at best only 14/15 hours of life with earbuds. My previous radio gave 130 hours maximum and 90 hours of continuous play time. This was essential with the two-week power outage from the 2011 earthquake. This is the sole reason for the 4 star rating.

Worth the money.

I bought this radio a few days ago. I am amazed at how sensitive it is. I am in Melbourne but it can receive not only all AM local stations but many stations out of Melbourne. The BK1198 – digital signal processing chip is incredible and is better than many old fashioned superhet radios. The tuning wheel is a little small and fiddly but is still usable. Also - I had some other headphones in my drawer that sounded better with it than the ones supplied. How can they make radio with that performance in such a small package for a very low price?

DIGITECH (Audio AM/FM Radio) This radio, whilst having very good clarity, is useless. The 2 batteries barely last two nights, even with very low volume. I have replaced the batteries with premium medical units with no change in performance. I reported this to Jaycar, the retailer, who advised no one else had reported this - effectively suggesting I was the problem. I have since seen lots of comments online indicating a problem with the radio. My advice, steer clear of this radio.
