The microscope can be easily removed for the stand for situations which demand it. On either side of the stand there are two metal holders to lock your object in place and a printed ruler to help you get an approximate feel for the length of objects. The optics built into this microscope are excellent. The sharpness of texture on magnified objects is incredible to look at you will spend hours searching for things to magnify (check out a full resolution 5MP capture on our website).

Not all that is promised

I bought this a while ago. It's usable, basically plug and play, pretty resilient. But it doesn't meet the advertised stats in two areas that I find particularly annoying. First, the highest magnification you get out of this is ~100x, going by the camera's own calibration software. I'm trying to attach about the best I could get. My experience with it is that it has the effective resolution of an older high school microscope - you can make out plant cells, stain for a nucleus, but forget about anything smaller or more detailed. I wasn't expecting oil lens quality, but I think 300x is generous. Second, you cannot actually adjust the brightness of the LEDs within the supplied software, as advertised. Or if you can it's not in the manual supplied nor in any way obvious in the software interface. I sure haven't found it!
